Ms Vinter, 31, of Leeds, said: “I’m really surprised to win because I was up against incredibly fierce competition from top local journalists across the UK.

"My colleagues at The Yorkshire Post are what has got me through reporting on some tough subjects during the pandemic, so I really want to thank the team here for their support.”

She was one of the first journalists to look into deaths in care homes in March and reported on accusations the NHS’s charity funding body was sitting on emergency funds.
