Why the Lord Mayor of Leeds braved a 20ft barefoot journey over hot coals

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Eileen Taylor, braved a fire walk at Millennium Square in aid of her chosen charity, SARSVL (Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds).

SARSVL provide specialist support to women and girls in the city who have been affected by sexual violence and abuse of any kind, at any time in their lives. In 2018/19, around 1200 women and girls were supported by its frontline services.

Coun Eileen Taylor said: "It was a great challenge for myself and all those involved. SARSVL is such a deserving charity which helps so many women and girls across the city. Any donations for the event will be greatly appreciated and will help the charity to continue the vital work they do day in, day out."

A SARSVL spokeswomen said: "We’re delighted that so many people were prepared to walk over hot coals for our charity. The fundraising fire walk was a lot of fun and we were so grateful that our very precious champion, Lord Mayor Councillor Eileen Taylor, was able to participate in the event."

"It’s events like this that make such a difference to our charity and it’s so encouraging to have support for the work we do all year round for the women and girls who need us.

"Our services are free for our service users, but of course they cost us. We have many volunteers giving their time but we increasingly need more financial support in a very competitive environment for our specialist service, the only one in Leeds."
