Tributes paid to Harry Gration as he announces retirement from BBC Look North

The 69-year-old presenter announced the news on Tuesday, October 14.

Bradford-born Gration said: "It’s been quite a traumatic day you could say.

"I’m incredibly sad, I’ve been very emotional about it.

"It’s been a very difficult time to be honest, when you have done what I’ve done for so long - to suddenly realise that you are going to wake up in the morning and not be going to work".

His co-star, Keeley Donovan, who is currently on maternity leave after welcoming daughter Scout with husband Johnny I'Anson, said: "Some sad news that Harry is leaving BBC Look North.

"It breaks my heart to think I’ll never sit on the red sofa with him again.

"A generous man, he has given me so much advice & support.

"Harry has no ego, is kind & has time for everyone.

"He is a dear friend who I love very much."

Fellow Look North presenter Amy Garcia, who has presented with Gration for seven years, said: "My dear friend Harry is leaving Look North.

"It has been an honour to sit alongside him for the past 7 years.

"Harry you have been a mentor and a great friend.

"Thank you for the support, the laughs & always saying yes no matter how ridiculous the challenge!"

Paul Hudson, Look North weatherman and Climate & Environment correspondent, said:" Still can’t quite believe it.

"Harry has not only been a colleague but a very good friend for over 20 years.

"It’s been a privilege to work with him and he will be hugely missed."

Look North presenter Sabbiyah Pervez said: "An absolute stalwart, Mr Yorkshire himself is leaving Look North

"Its been a mighty privilege to share the screen from time to time with TV titan Harry Gration who hails from the city of legends...Bradford.

"He welcomed us young uns with so much love & warmth. Best of luck Harry."

Luxmy Gopal said: "Little did we know it back then, but this was last time Harry presented with me, in March before Covid rules.

"I'm gutted you and I will never share the red sofa again.

"Happy retirement to a legend in the biz and the kindest mentor a newbie like me could've asked for."

Senior BBC presenter Amanda Harper said: "He is simply the best.

"We are going to miss you so much.

"Thank you for your support and friendship over the years. Irreplaceable."

BBC News at Ten presenter Huw Edwards said: "One of the greats.

"Peerless broadcaster and superb journalist. Best wishes Harry."

ITV Caldener's Christine Talbot and Duncan Wood also paid tribute to the broadcaster.

Talbot said: "Good luck Harry.

"TV in Yorkshire will never be quite the same without you, but I’m sure you will be back in some way soon.

"Sending huge love and respect from all of us on the “other side”."

Wood said: "All the very best Harry.

"Always a pleasure to be in your company. 42 yrs is one heck of an achievement! Hope you’ll have time for the golf now!"

His wife, Helen Gration, said: "I’d like to thank everyone for the lovely words you’ve sent about my amazing husband.

"He is so modest and doesn’t realise what he has meant to many.

"For me, he embodies public service - giving selflessly, cheering, minding on behalf of all. A fine role model Love you."

He will present his last show on Wednesday, October 21.
