This is a special thank you to people in one area of Leeds - but the idea could spread across the city
Councillor Javaid Akhtar welcomed everyone to the event, the first of its kind, at St Chad’s Parish Centre, and explained its mission, to recognise vital work in the community and praise those who carry it out.
Lord Mayor Eileen Taylor said in her address that true heroes are people who “do things day in, day out and don’t ask for any recognition.”

Hide AdShe added: “You’re all wonderful – truly amazing for the hours that you have given back to your community. Leeds City Council and whatever organisation you volunteer for truly appreciate the time, commitment and hard work that you’ve given them over the years.
“We have people who provide services for our elders, activities for young people and families, look after green spaces and care for our neighbourhoods. This is why you are our heroes.”
She added, “You are busy with your own lives but still you have time for the vulnerable.
“It’s a real pleasure for me to hand out these certificates in recognition of all the hard work the Inner North West have put in.”

Hide AdCertificates were given to action groups, food banks, charities, schools, local police and PCSOs, and more.
Bollywood is spicing up the lives of one group of ladies in Leeds, as just one successful initiative to replace loneliness with fun activity, within local communities.
The ladies of Oulton-based Bollywood dance group D Dance Theatre C.I.C. performed their brand of entertainment at the awards event. This band of 50-90 year olds are instructed by Chiragi Solanki, and funded with grant help from Leeds Community Foundation.
The evening closed with live music and an Indian feast.
