Seven half marathons in seven days for Leeds Rhinos fan inspired by Rob Burrow's courageous MND battle

Mr Brining, 46, of Rodley, said he watched Rob Burrow play for the Rhinos for many years and has been inspired by his courage and people's fundraising efforts as he battles motor neurone disease.

Mr Brining, a member of Farsley Flyers running club, is set to do his first half marathon on Monday February 15.

He plans to run from Rodley to the Rob Burrow mural off Woodhouse Lane near Leeds city centre and back again.

Mr Brining said he decided to do the fundraising runs after Leeds Rhinos director of rugby Kevin Sinfield completed seven marathons in seven days to raise more than £1m for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Mr Brining, who works as an engineer, said: "I have been a Leeds Rhinos fan all my life and I was lucky enough to see Rob play in his prime."

"This is such a terrible disease which affects so many people.

"I've never really understood it fully until Rob got diagnosed. It really hit home to me personally.

"All money raised I'm sure will go towards vital research and help for people and families suffering.

"I originally set myself a target of £250, but it has been pushing nearer £1,000 now so it has really gathered speed and I am really proud of that.

"I would like to thank all who have sponsored me so far, it means so so much."

Rob, an eight-time Grand Final winner with Rhinos from 2004 to 2017, was diagnosed with MND in December, 2019.

He has become a high-profile ambassador for the MNDA and was awarded an MBE in the latest new year honours.

Earlier this week Leeds Rhinos unveiled a new-look legend’ shirt in Rob's honour and to raise funds for and awareness of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
