Humberside Police told parents to be careful of 'loose or floaty dresses, mummy bandages or Dracula cloaks' which may be cheap imports that are not flame retardent.
The costumes could trail close to the ground and 'quickly catch fire' if in contact with a naked flame - such as one 'hidden' within a pumpkin, police said.
The police told parents to always check the label and look for the CE mark.
In a post on social media, the force said: "If you're buying or making an outfit for Halloween, be careful with loose or floaty witch dresses, mummy bandages or Dracula cloaks!
"If they trail close to the ground, they can quickly catch fire if in contact with a naked flame 'hidden' in a pumpkin.
"Cheap children's dresses may look great, but be cautious of cheap imports which may not be very flame retardant.
"Check the label and look for the CE mark."
