Percy the pug announces doggy engagement to Mabel after they fell in love in Roundhay Park

Loved-up pugs Percy and Mabel who are due to be married this summer

Passionate pups Percy and Mabel first met during a group pug walk in Roundhay Park, after their owners shared a lift to the meet-up.

Noticing their instant romance, Julie Goodall, owner of Mabel, and Danii Clarke, owner of Percy, met up several more times.

Julie said: "We noticed that Mabel and Percy were getting on well and we could see that Percy was quite fond of her, trying to climb on her!

"We carried it on from there, we take them out for walks and people always comment how nice they look together.

"We thought it would be lovely to raise some funds and follow on with a wedding."

Mabel and Percy live just a stone's throw away from each other in Calderdale and their romance has continued to blossom on regular walks together.

The loved-up pugs have announced their engagement as part of The Pug Dog Welfare and Rescue Association (PDWRA) Valentine's activity week.

PDWRA looks after hundreds of pugs across the country and helps to find new owners for pugs in need of a loving home.

The Valentine's Day programme includes sharing pug dating profiles, colouring competitions and photo shares as well as fundraising activities.

The charity has made a film of Percy and Mabel's adoring romance which will be launched on Saturday evening.

Julie and Danii are now planning the wedding, which they hope to be a spectacular event once lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Julie said: "We want to get a couple of nice outfits for them, invite lots of guests and their bridesmaid Coco and best man Arthur, who are of course pugs, will be attending.

"We're thinking of hosting a raffle and anything to raise money for the charity.

"Some people might think we’re crackers but we’re not bothered!"

Amanda Brook, Yorkshire PDWRA Fundraising Lead, said: "Since lockdown our volunteer team have had to turn their efforts to how they could continue to raise funds safely.

"We have moved our focus to online activities which has involved learning a whole range of new skills and dedicating many hours to build up our online community of supporters.

"We are having great fun hosting live games online on our Facebook page and are looking forward to more meet ups, and a wedding in the coming months"
