People line streets as new takeaway gives away 500 pizzas for free on opening day

People lined the streets of Gipton after being promised free pizza by a new takeaway - with 500 given away in just one night.

Pizza Pizza Leeds opened its doors yesterday (Mon May 17) on Dib Lane, Gipton.

Young owner Junaid Hussain 23, told the YEP he would give a free 11 inch pizza to any customer who visited the shop on the opening night to thank the community for their support in his venture.

Pizza Pizza already has a successful branch in Beeston.

The owner prepared around 500 dough bases as demand was expected to be very high.

Speaking to the YEP on Monday, Junaid said: "We have one branch in Beeston already and this is our second branch.

"The offer we have is that anyone who comes down to our new shop can have a free 11” pizza, no strings attached.

"We reckon that we will have around 350-500 people turning up today and we have enough stock for 500 pizzas."

The shop will not be operating deliveries on Monday night and all giveaway pizzas will be in person.

Junaid urged customers to follow social distancing rules.

He added: "We would like to thank the local residents for the immense support they've shown us so far.

"We invite everyone to come down today and try our food."

True to his word, Junaid told the YEP he gave away all 500 pizzas which had been prepared.

Many gave glowing reviews on social media after collecting their food.
