Online retailer teams up with The Real Junk Food Project to tackle food waste in Yorkshire

Online retailer Food Circle Supermarket has partnered with The Real Junk Food Project (TRJFP) to combat the growing issue of food waste by donating healthy snacks and nutritional drinks.

TRJFP is a social enterprise set up to tackle food waste and feed bellies, not bins. The snacks and drinks, provided by Food Circle Supermarket, will be included in food parcels across the West Yorkshire region. It will be the first in a series of regular donations to TRJFP from Food Circle Supermarket - the UK’s first online in-date surplus food retailer, delivering quality products including protein bars, cookies, and even brownies, from some of the best-known brands in the health and sports nutrition world including Fulfil, Grenade, Clif Bar and Deliciously Ella.

Since launching in 2018, the online store, founded by Paul Simpson and James Barthorpe, has saved more than 500,000 food and drink items from going to waste and having a negative impact on the environment.

The Real Junk Food Project was set up by Adam Smith in 2013. It has grown from a small pay-as-you-feel café in a Leeds suburb to a national institution which has inspired more than 120 similar initiatives globally. It deals with approximately 1,000 tonnes of surplus food per year and redistributes food across a purpose built network of charities, schools, community hubs and more.

Adam said: “Building relationships is at the heart everything we do and we’re thrilled to be working with another like-minded organisation to make sure food gets to those who need it.”

Paul Simpson added: “We are really excited about this partnership. We want to make sure we are doing our bit to help people and help safeguard the planet.”
