Leeds Sports Awards to be screened live on TV for first time

The annual Leeds Sports Awards set to be held next month will be broadcast live on TV for the first time.

The annual Leeds Sports Awards set to be held next month will be broadcast live on TV for the first time.

Sports fans from across the city and beyond will be able to join in the 18th annual celebrations by tuning in to Leeds TV for the awards ceremony on May 27.

The Yorkshire Evening Post is a media partner for the Leeds Sports Awards, which are a highlight in the Yorkshire sporting calendar,

The awards celebrate the sporting achievements of those in the city during 2020 and acknowledge the community endeavours of people across Leeds.

Hosted by Tanya Arnold, the live awards show will highlight those who have championed sport during 2020, which was a challenging year for everyone involved in sport at all levels.

Despite difficult circumstances there is much to celebrate, such as the impressive sporting performances from the city’s professional teams and athletes.

The awards will also recognise and honour the incredible individuals and organisations across Leeds who kept communities fit, healthy and active during 2020.

There are two new awards for those that championed community spirit - the Inspirational Community Champion(s) Award for both under and over 18’s.

Everyone can nominate their favourite sporting stars and teams as well as local unsung heroes of 2020.

Sally Griffiths vice chair of Sport Leeds said: "Sport Leeds is delighted to bring the annual Sports Awards to the city after such a challenging year for many in our sporting communities.

"With a different look and feel this year, the event is hoping to celebrate the amazing contributions individuals and groups have made during the pandemic, to keep us active.

"This has only been possible with the incredible generosity from our sponsors and partners, thank you to each of them and Banana Kick for helping to make this possible."

The winners are to be chosen by a panel of judges who represent sports across the city with the winners announced live on the night.

Leeds Sports Awards are backed by Leeds City Council, Leeds Bid, Blacks Solicitors, University of Leeds, Leeds Trinity University and Moda Living.

The Leeds Sports Awards will broadcast live on Leeds TV from 6.30pm to to 8pm on Thursday May 27 on Sky 117, Virgin 159 and Freeview Channel 7.

The closing date for nomination entries is Sunday May 2.
