Leeds residents took to social media to speculate after a 'fireball meteor' was spotted across the skies of the city on Thursday night.

One resident asked if anyone had seen a 'massive fireball' in the sky at around 9pm on Thursday.

Hundreds of residents took to social media - including popular forum Leedsplace - to speculate what the sighting may be.

One social media user said: "It crackled, I thought it was a plane coming down!"

Another added: "What was that?! It made me jump. Couldn't believe it."

Meanwhile, the UK Meteor Network tweeted: "#Fireball reports coming in'

The network have tweeted a number of meteor sightings across the UK in the last week, including in Surrey, England.
