Leeds pub crowned UK's noisiest after England World Cup roar hits 134dB

A Leeds pub has been named the noisiest in the country after England World Cup fans logged an ear-splitting 134.1dB

A pub in Leeds has been crowned the "noisiest pub in the UK" after recording an ear-shattering 134.1dB during England's World Cup match against Mexico.

Fans at the Moot Hall Arms celebrated as loudly as a jet engine taking off (130-140dB) when Jude Bellingham scored his second goal of the game at the Azteca Stadium last week.

The pub is taking part in Stonegate Group and Heineken's Roar of the Nation challenge, one of several venues across the country measuring crowd noise levels during the Three Lions' World Cup campaign in North America.

Competing against other participating venues, the challenge encourages supporters to cheer as loudly as they can throughout the tournament.

Speaking about the initiative, Kay Bartlett, chief marketing officer at Stonegate Group, said: "Football tournaments are all about shared moments, traditions and atmosphere, and there's nothing quite like watching a huge match and enjoying the experience surrounded by fellow fans in a packed pub.

"Our Roar of the Nation campaign will allow us to measure the atmosphere in pubs across England and Scotland throughout the World Cup to see where the loudest fans and the best tournament atmospheres can be enjoyed."

Six pubs in England are taking part in the challenge, with the Moot Hall Arms claiming the top spot. The Leeds venue also occupies ninth and 10th place after reaching 131.6dB when Bellingham scored and at full-time in England's group-stage win over Croatia.

Alongside the Leeds United favourite on Mill Hill, the participating venues include two London pubs - Director's Box and The Minories - as well as Walkabout in Birmingham, The Vile in Manchester and Akenside Traders in Newcastle.

Craig Woolley at Heineken UK, added: “Nothing beats the buzz of the pub when our home teams are playing. From the first chant to the final whistle, it’s where fans come together to share the excitement, tension and pure joy of the big occasion – and we can’t wait!”

The current league table of participating venues stands as follows:

  1. Leeds – The Moot Hall Arms: England vs Mexico – Bellingham goal – 134.1 dB
  2. London – The Minories: England vs Croatia – Rashford goal – 133.9 dB
