Leeds man shares how Arctic Circle charity challenge was an 'out of this world experience'

A Leeds man has shared the “incredible memories” he made on an Arctic Circle expedition to raise money for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity.

Tim, 64, was one of 13 explorers who tested their physical and mental limits in frozen wild landscapes as part of Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity’s ‘Arctic Adventure’ challenge last month.

The Arctic Circle challenge saw the 13 explorers train in cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, Arctic survival skills, navigation and campcraft as they learnt the essential skills to survive and move in the extreme environment of the Arctic Circle.

Tim found the toughest aspect of the adventure, which culminated in a two-day trek into the backcountry, was the physical fortitude needed.

Tim said: “It was an amazing thing to be part of and it really challenged me.

“The physicality of the challenge was the hardest part for me; the endurance required – funnily enough my normal life doesn't involve pulling sleds through the Arctic!”

During the challenge, Tim not only improved his fitness but made new connections with his fellow explorers and saw spectacular sights including the Northern Lights.

“The other participants were all strangers to me before the trip but now they all feel like really good mates as we all supported each other throughout,” Tim said.

“I’ve also come home with some incredible memories – my favourite part was going across the lake and taking in the landscape there which is utterly amazing and kind of out of this world. And the stillness – that really hit home.”

First founded by Bernadette Cleary OBE 40 years ago, Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity supports children with a life-threatening or terminal illness and their families.

They adapt the help they provide to meet each family’s specific needs but it can include providing a listening ear to fears and anxieties, helping to explain illnesses, diagnoses and treatments, and organising fun activities to help sick children and their brothers and sisters.

Now rested from the Arctic Adventure, Tim urges others to give this challenge a go.

“I would encourage anybody to do the same and give it a go.

“I’m not particularly outdoorsy and consider myself averagely fit and had the best time – met some wonderful people and learned about the incredible work done by Rainbow Trust.”
