‘It’s exciting for Leeds'

Rachel King was in the crowd with her son when King Charles arrived. She said: “It was exciting when he got out, really nice to see him in person. It was a historic moment, especially for the little one.

“Everyone wanted to capture it on their phones - there was a lot of very happy people who got to shake his hand at the front. Lots of cheering and we’re expecting some more ‘God saves the Kings’ when he comes out.

“It’s exciting for Leeds, especially since he took the throne. It will be nice to see him once he’s coronated if he comes back again, hopefully I can bring my [eldest] with me as it’s at school at the moment.”

Historian dresses up as suffragette to greet King Charles

Journalist Mahnoor Mahmood spoke to Jude Kershaw, who greeted King Charles dressed as a sufragette.

Jude, a freelance historian, said: “Normally I work for museums, I work for primary schools and so on. But today I have been working as a street performer in Leeds city centre as a suffragette.

“I did come to see the King as well. So I do find interesting as someone who is a historian because there has been a lot of change in the last 100 years in the Royal Family. Some things haven’t changed either.”
