From unmissable bars to curious street snacks, it’s a city that’s kept me entertained and bemused in equal measure.
Leeds is unapologetically quirky, with so much to do - but so much that people seem to take for granted, too.
As an outsider, I’ve spent the last 24 months acclimatising to life here and have put together a list of some of the things that I’ve learnt in that time.
So, without further ado, here are some of the things I’ve noticed -

7. Bakeries
Whenever I’m asked what’s missing in the city centre, my answer is always this: a high-quality, affordable bakery. It would do so well, the smell of freshly baked bread would be irresistible. Nova Bakehouse, on Leeds Dock, is excellent – but still a 40-minute walk from my house. A similar bakery closer to home would be ideal. | James Hardisty Photo: James Hardisty

8. Beer
If you drink beer, this is the city for you. I’ve fallen in love with Leeds’ indie breweries, from giants like Kirkstall and North, to smaller ones like Wetherby Brew Co, which I tried for the first time last week. There are plenty of traditional ales and experimental craft brews at these places. And they’re often housed in monumental spaces, like Kirkstall Brewery’s new base at the historic Tetley building. | James Hardisty Photo: James Hardisty

9. Culture
I had no plans the other night, so looked up what was on in the city and ended up seeing a captivating live performance by a pianist at the Howard Assembly Room. Living just a short walk from the world-class Opera North and Northern Ballet has been one of the best things about living in Leeds city centre. | National World Photo: National World

10. Student housing
It’s constantly under construction, it seems. The city’s youthful energy is in part thanks to its student population, but these shiny new luxury buildings have me questioning how students are affording it – and whether new developments are crowding out other ideas. | James Hardisty Photo: James Hardisty

11. Independent bars
You don’t have to go far to find an amazing bar in Leeds. The city brings a refreshing departure from chains, as each venue has its own personality, whether it’s a relaxed wine bar or an inventive cocktail joint. My favourite is Rolands, on Call Lane. | Bruce Rollinson Photo: Bruce Rollinson

12. Cinema
Hyde Park Picture House, with its vintage charm and cosy atmosphere, is one of my favourite places that I've found in Leeds. Since moving here last April, I've seen a handful of good and bad films, but have always enjoyed the nostalgic escape this last surviving gaslit cinema offers. | Simon Hulme Photo: Simon Hulme
