Spencer Tovey rushed downstairs to his parents Corrine and Russ after hearing shouting from the home opposite their own on Acres Hall Crescent at around 9.30pm.

His parents went to the window and spotted a man's hands on the window ledge before a huge cloud of black smoke billowed from the window.

Corrine rang the fire service before Russ courageously used ladders to try and save the man.

Unfortunately, the ladders did not work due to obstacles in the way.

However, quick-thinking Russ and Corrine shouted for the man to hang down from the ledge and jump and they waited underneath.

Corrine told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "We laid him in the garden but then there was a small explosion so we moved him to next door.

"We got him water and sat with him until an ambulance came.
