Around 7,000 people gathered in the public square in Leeds city centre on Sunday to celebrate Leeds United winning the Championship title.

Despite the jovial atmosphere, a large amount of rubbish was left behind by revellers attending the impromptu party, which has not been officially endorsed by the club as it contravened social distancing guidelines on large gatherings.

Police also arrested nine people for public order offences, including throwing bottles at officers.

Leeds City Council's cleaning teams were sent to the site early this morning and by 1pm had completed the clear-up operation with the help of some Leeds United fans who also offered a hand.

Most of the litter consisted of broken bottles and beer cans left scattered over Millennium Square.

A supporter who did not wish to be named was seen piling rubbish into a shopping trolley during the clean-up and said: "I’m a big Leeds fan but I disagree with all this rubbish. I live in the city, I support the city and I’m out here cleaning it.

"I celebrated too but I did it in a respectful manner."

Leeds City Council chief executive Tom Riordan called for fans to thank the street cleaners for their efforts: "Next time you’re passing a council worker who’s cleaning the streets, please can you say a quick, socially distanced thank you? They are doing a brilliant job as ever in Leeds ."

Police monitored the party and a female officer suffered a serious head injury after being struck by a bottle. Fifteen fans were also hurt.

Police began dispersing the crowds in the evening and the square was cleared just before midnight. The party had lasted around 12 hours.
