The Headingley Greengrocer was bought by the Headingley Development Trust (HDT) - an organisation of residents and business working to improve the suburb - at the end of April 2019, continuing a tradition for a greengrocers on the site that goes back a century.

And despite being thrust into the current pandemic during its first year of trading, the shop has gone from strength to strength - remaining open with social distancing measures, employing additional members of staff and supporting local charities.

Helen Seymour, of HDT, said: "When we re-opened the shop under community ownership, we never imagined it would now be trading in such challenging times, but thanks to its loyal customers and the commitment and hard work of its staff, it has stayed open and continues to offer a vital service."

Jane Williams, who works at the store, said: "Prices on some items are still variable due to supply issues but our aim is to keep a very wide range of stock to suit a range of budgets."

The shop also provides donations of fresh food every week to Rainbow Junktion at Hyde Park, which intercepts food which would otherwise have gone to waste, and Meeting Point in Armley, a charity which supports refugees and asylum seekers in Leeds.

Emma Crossley, of Meeting Point, said: "To have a regular and consistent donation of fresh fruit and vegetables of such high quality, has been amazing and has meant every food parcel given out has fresh produce in it.

"For many who attend, we are their only source of fresh food and, particularly given the current circumstances, a lifeline for a number of them."

Helen Seymour added: "The Headingley Greengrocer looks forward to being here and thriving for many years to come. Together with its sister shop opposite The Natural Food Store, which is also community-owned and Headingley Farm Butcher next door, it is testament to the fact that the High Street is very much alive and is a critical part of the local community particularly in these most difficult times."

The greengrocers business was bought using money generated through the Headingley Investment Fund (HIF), which was launched by HDT in the summer of 2018.

With the aim to use local money to make a difference in Headingley, nearly £481,000 was raised through donations and input from a community shares scheme.

As well as buying the greengrocers' business, the fund was able to refinance HEART, its flagship community hub, and also bought semi-derelict house, transforming it into a desirable home.
