Black Lives Matter demonstration in Woodhouse Moor cancelled

The Black Lives Matter Leeds demonstration in Woodhouse Moor in Hyde Park has been cancelled.

The peaceful protest was going to to take place on Sunday, June 14.

However, another demonstration organised by Black Voices Matter was due to be held at the same time but in Millennium Square.

Therefore, the Black Lives Matter organisers have decided to cancel the Hyde Park protest and participate in the Black Voices Matter one instead.

The Hyde Park protest has been postponed until Sunday, June 21 instead.

Organisers from Black Lives Matter Leeds said: "Unity is so very important in our community.

"Black lives matter and black voices matter are jointly committed to fighting and eradicating institutional racism and injustice for black people.

"On that basis Black Lives Matter has decided to pull their resources to work with Black Voices Matter and support and participate in the event they have organised to take place in Millennium square on Sunday.

"We hope that you will all come along and support this important initiative . One Love"

The Black Voices Matter demonstration will be held in Millennium Square on Sunday, June 14 from 2.30pm.

Organisers invite people to "come and join us and stand in solidarity against systemic and institutional racism embedded in our society and police brutality and injustice inflicted again black people".

They will also commemorate the loss of George Floyd and others.

People have been reminded to bring gloves, face mask and sanitiser and to stand two metres apart.
