We’re fiercely proud to call Leeds our home.
From its vibrant music scene and beautiful green spaces, to independent shops and the new wave of homes popping up all over the city, there’s lots to love about living here - and a reason many locals stay put for life.
But what does Leeds need to make it even better?
We asked our readers for their thoughts, and hundreds of you responded.
From better public transport to entertainment venues and a new landmark structure, here are 15 things you think Leeds desperately needs to help it continue to thrive.
1. A better transport system
Transport was high on the agenda for hundreds of our readers. Julie Richardson called for “an easier road system”, while Beverly Cook said better accessibility between the bus station and train station was vital. Natalia Kaur Kang said the city needs “a viable, reliable, modern, inter-connecting transport system.” Paul Weston and Nana Naomi want “pot hole free roads”. | Adobe Stock

2. A tram network
Leeds remains the largest city in Western Europe without a mass transit system, so it was no surprise that this was one of the biggest things you’d like to see. Work on a tram system to connect Leeds with Bradford is pledged to start by 2028, but many readers called for a city-wide network across Leeds. Sam J Bailey said: “They work in Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Birmingham and Blackpool. Getting on a tram outside the rain station to Elland Road would be so much better than buses.” | WYCA
3. A bigger airport
Leeds Bradford Airport opened a £100million terminal extension last year, but Nish Patel still thinks the city needs a “bigger airport.” Neil Chapman wants “more international destinations”, while others called for a rail, metro or tram link from LBA to the city centre. | Simon Hulme

4. A new concert venue
Andy Caines wants to see a bigger concert venue in addition to the First Direct Bank Arena, pointing out that “Manchester has two large ones”. “Leeds Arena is mainly seats and only 13,000 capacity,” he added. | YEP
5. More support for small businesses
Leeds locals have always championed their local independent businesses, and readers called for more support to help them thrive. James Young said “small markets and local shops bring a community together”, while Ian Davidson said he wants to see lower rents for traders in Kirkgate Market and for shops, pubs and restaurants. | Steve Riding

6. A landmark structure
David Ramsen and Katie Flanagan think Leeds is missing a notable landmark structure. David said the Brick Man, an Antony Gormley sculpture proposed in the 1980s, would have been good for the city - and Ian De-Whytell agreed that it was a “missed opportunity”. Ian added: “Maybe a large statement statue could go where the YP/YEP tower is on Wellington Street. Would look impressive as people drive along the inner ring road.” | Local Library
