A letter we published from Michael McGowan of Leeds suggests the Queen should now call it a day and step aside with dignity, followed by an urgent review of UK institutions. Brian Hyman wrote in to say that what has happened is a natural progression, and that the news is full of ‘sensational nonsense’.

The response from our Facebook readers to the men’s views was as follows;

Gillian Barker said: "The Royal family make a lot of money for the UK. Yes, they do get some public money, but the revenue they create is far greater. I do agree with a streamlined royal family but I do think they are important and should remain. Harry and Meghan should go be independent as they wish, but forfeit all the luxuries that come with being a senior royal along with their HRH title, as they have expressed they do not wish for that lifestyle. Truth be known though they will be hounded more now by the paparazzi than ever."

Claire Magee said: "Can’t wait to see the back of them and their egos. Just hope we’re not shelling out for them for security - would not be right."

Marilyn Parker said: "No it won’t, the Royal Family will carry on but they will change the course of other Royals getting married in the future."

Clare Marie Dunning added: "Let them live how they want. He’s not the next in line, so it doesn’t really matter. If I was him and his wife, I would run as fast as I could from this dysfunctional family that we know as Royal."

Tom Broadhead agreed with one of the letter writers, saying: "Why does it matter? They’re human beings, and they have a right to have their own lives if they so wish. Bryan Hyman Makes perfect sense with his writing, and anyone that can’t understand it is being ignorant."

Others agreed with Mr McGowan about reviewing other UK institutions.

Barbara Ward said: "Time the House of Lords was scrapped. Think the Queen and the Royal family bring more money into the UK than those overpaid lords."

Denise Lister agreed, saying: "I agree it’s time the House of Lords was no more ...would save a lot of money that could be put to better use."
