Over the last week we have witnessed the most remarkable uniting of our city as we take a moment to breathe in the Premier League status of our club.

The passion, the belief and the celebration is something so many of us have dreamed about for so long.

Leeds United is ingrained into the hearts and minds of the many generations of fans who share fond memories of their first time watching the Whites in action on the football pitch. Never has a club anthem been more reflective of the ups and downs that supporters have faced over the last 16 years.

Marching On Together encapsulates the real spirit of what it means to be a fan. It courses through the veins of those who live and breathe Leeds United.

And the return back to the Premier League puts paid to the ghost of seasons past.

It’s a time to stoke the fires and put our city firmly on the map.

And most important of all will be the return of the fans - as and when it is safe to do so - to take pride of place in the terrace and the new Norman Hunter South Stand to cherish the memories of those great Leeds legends who would have relished the opportunity to see their club return back to its rightful place.

And we should not underestimate the impact this will have. Regardless of where your football allegiances lie, the ripple of the Leeds United effect will be felt right across the city.

As Ruth Pitt, who heads up the Leeds 2023 cultural celebration, said last week: football at its best is culture at its best.

It is a form of storytelling that beats almost anything you will see on the stage or screen - no scriptwriter could have penned this fairytale ending.

And it has been nothing short of a privilege for the Yorkshire Evening Post to be right at the heart of telling that story from the birth of the club over the last 100 years.

We were there when Don Revie’s legends won their first title with a battling draw at Anfield. When Allan ‘Sniffer’ Clarke’s diving header settled the cup final in 1972. When Sgt Wilko’s side went up in 1990 then won the league two years later in a kit that was, lest we forget, sponsored by the YEP.

When David O’Leary’s likely lads blazed a trail across Europe. We were there every step of the way.

And all through this season, as Marcelo Bielsa steered United back to the big-time, we have been ever-presents in the press box, watching and willing a new set of Leeds heroes to fulfil their destiny.

As the title’s guardian I have been incredibly touched to see such an outpouring of gratitude from fans for our coverage.

Our team has fielded calls from across the world as people are keen to support and value our journalism - and we’ve even had to reprint last Monday’s edition too.

It means so very much to know we have got the city behind us and we hope that you continue to invest in the YEP so we can carry on doing what we do best.

And together as a city we will be Marching On Together to a new era as we turn the pages on a new chapter in the club’s history.
