For the last 72 years the National Health Service has been the beating heart of this country to support so many of us during our lowest times.

The dedicated staff at its very core are a testament to its values - to provide care and compassion to those in their time of need.

Never has it been needed or cherished as much as it is today while the country continues to navigate its way through this once-in-a-generation crisis.

The NHS and its staff have truly captured the hearts of the nation as thousands of us took to the streets to celebrate and give thanks to those frontline workers during some of our darkest days.

Tonight sees a moment of quiet reflection as we pause and remember the human cost of the pandemic and light a candle in their memories.

And tomorrow marks a nationwide applause to mark the service’s birthday.

We will be forever grateful to those health heroes who have been right at the heart of the fight against coronavirus.
