Nothing could have prepared health chiefs for the unfolding crisis we have borne witness to this year.

But in the face of the pandemic staff at Leeds’ hospitals and wider healthcare sector have been praised for their “speed, flexibility and resilience” by the boss of the city’s hospitals.

Julian Hartley, chief executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, said since the outbreak in March, he has been “struck” by the response “across all teams in the Trust and our partners”.

It comes at a time when the number of inpatient admissions surpassed the peak experienced in spring.

And that is why the city-wide show of strength and support is so crucial at this time to ensure that our treasured NHS can cope with the demand as we head into winter.

It is a time when the health system creaks with the increased demand - this will only be heightened in a Covid age.

We must all continue to play our part to protect the NHS.
