It’s a popular route but is also one of the most hazardous.

Our reporter Joe Cooper joined the Leeds Cycling Campaign on that stretch of road to see first hand what it is like in rush hour traffic.

On some parts of the route there is little room for those on their bikes and even the most confident cyclist would feel the need to have eyes in the back of their head.

As part of the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Unlock the Gridlock campaign we are calling on planning chiefs to look at how they can make cycling a favourable alternative to getting people to ditch their cars to ease the pressure on the city’s clogged roads.

These include looking at how to make cycling a safer prospect as well as making sure there is plenty of space on the roads for cyclists without street clutter such as parked cars or bus stops in the way.
