Why Leeds hospital staff deserve recognition during coronavirus pandemic - Julian Hartley

It’s a real privilege to be able to pay tribute to our magnificent health workers across Leeds during what has been the greatest global health emergency in NHS history, writes Julian Hartley, chief executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

As leader of one of the country’s largest NHS Trusts I have been struck by the tremendous spirit, resilience and collaboration among our staff in responding to this unprecedented health crisis.

There’s been a real collaborative effort in continuing to provide excellent patient care in challenging circumstances when all around you have had patients struggling with this virus.

The resilience of our staff in just keeping going has been incredible to see.

We have been struck by the tremendous adaptability of staff in our hospitals – many who have quickly trained up to carry out new roles to help in areas of need.

There has rightly been widespread recognition of the care and compassion of our frontline staff like nurses and doctors, but it’s been a real team effort and they have had great support and backing from everyone else in technical, admin and non-clinical support roles across the Trust. There has also been the incredible work gone into the creation of the Yorkshire and Humber

Nightingale Hospital in Harrogate which was developed and prepared ready for use within a matter of weeks – and is still available should the need arise. Throughout this virus outbreak we’ve continued to provide emergency care which has placed added pressure on our staff, particularly when they are having to deal with tragic cases where COVID-19 patients don’t survive their illness.

There have been happier examples too, where patients have been able to leave hospital after being very ill - battling through thanks to the care they have received and their own determination and fight.

It is a terrific and heart-warming moment for everyone when patients are clapped from the hospital ward to continue their recovery at home.

Everyone has risen to the challenge of this health emergency – including the public who have made such a difference by staying indoors, social distancing and relieving some of the pressure on our hospitals and staff.

There will be more challenges ahead as we continue to battle this virus and begin to slowly and carefully plan the reintroduction of routine operations – at all times making sure that our patients and staff remain safe.

You are all heroes!
