Why Chancellor must invest in Leeds and West Yorkshire - the YEP says

Local leaders have today called for £750m in Government support to help West Yorkshire recover from coronavirus.

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority has asked for the funding and support from Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

The plan, which covers four key areas, has the potential to create up to 70,000 new jobs and add £8.6bn to the UK’s economy.

It aims to build on the region’s strengths in digital, manufacturing and entrepreneurship, and the opportunities of the transition to a net zero carbon economy.

In an open letter, they warn that without action the pandemic could lead to 58,000 job losses in the region and see the West Yorkshire economy shrink by £12bn this year alone.

And that is why the Yorkshire Evening Post is backing that plea to support our region.

So many lives and livelihoods have been impacted by the virus.

It’s a simple request.
