Calls-to-arms by this newspaper, urging people to support local businesses are not new.

Our backing of local people who make it their mission to set up shop and be a part of the economic fabric of this city is in the DNA of the YEP.

But this time it’s different. This time it is – in business terms – a matter of life and death.

For just as covid-19 is taking thousands of loved ones from their families, its far-reaching impacts are also taking businesses from their owners.

You will have heard time and again the phrase: use it or lose it, but never before has that message been more relevant or so important.

And so today we are urging the people of Leeds to work with us on getting to know those so-called ‘non-essential businesses’ that have been forced to close their doors, but are working harder than ever to trade over the phone and online.

These businesses are run by our own and in Leeds, we look out for our own.

So, come on Leeds.

Let’s make sure we support local. Every time.
