We can't rely on common sense when tackling coronavirus - YEP letters

One major flaw in the Government’s coronavirus measures is that it keeps asking the public to use ‘common sense’.

While the vast majority of people understand this plea and the importance of using ‘common sense’ there are a dangerous minority to whom it is anathema.

This group also includes the ‘I don’t like government telling me what to do! ‘, the ‘It’s an over reaction! ‘ and the ‘If everybody else is stopping in what’s it matter if I go out?’ mentality.

There are reports of groups getting together for walks and cycle rides. Driving to beauty spots and the seaside because it’s nice weather and it might be the last chance we get for some time!

It’s the same mentality that had people queueing round the block at McDonald’s because it was going to close at 7pm or drinking right up to last minute before the pubs were shut!

The coronavirus works to its own timetable, it never rests, it never takes a day off and only by concerted and united effort can we slow it down and hopefully control it.

Ignoring government advice and failing to use common sense is dangerous!

We have all seen the projections of the potential for contamination through uncontrolled social contact yet it is obviously not getting through to a small but significant number of people.

It is up to us all to follow the government’s advice in these very trying times and it is incumbent on all of us to police ourselves and others!

To paraphrase ‘Keep calm and keep safe’.
