We are careering towards a shambolic crash out of the EU - YEP letters
A short letter from me calling for a European Union trade deal outraged three readers (YEP letters, July 9).
Richard Wilson, Chairman, Leeds for Europe
It is remarkable how some supporters of the winning side in the 2016 referendum are still so angry.
Is it possible that they are noticing that they have not actually won anything at all?
In fact, almost everyone except for the millionaire speculators who backed Leave will probably end up as losers from the Brexit fiasco.
Especially if we crash out of the EU without a good deal at the end of this year.
I was accused of “dragging up disingenuous facts” about Britain not being ready for a No-Deal Brexit in December.
But that criticism was published just a day after reports that International Trade Secretary Liz Truss has warned her Cabinet colleagues that our borders will not be ready for No Deal. The solution? A deal.
It becomes ever more evident, as we career towards a shambolic crash out of the EU, that they never had a plan. Their only skill is in campaigning, not governing.
Any Brexit crisis is their creation. And the onus should be on them to resolve it, not blame others.
Our ability to campaign has been curtailed during the lockdown, but our views are as relevant today as when Winston Churchill founded the national European Movement UK – of which Leeds for Europe is proud to be a branch - 70 years ago.
New members of both organisations are guaranteed a warm welcome.
Both will continue to make the case that we share many values and economic links with our European neighbours, and it is in Britain’s best interest to work closely with them.
We need an agreement that reflects that.
