Traditionally, August sees the hard work of students and teachers duly recognised. It’s the culmination of years of support, encouragement and learning.

Up and down the country, teachers and support staff have worked tirelessly to support children and families during this challenging time.

For me, the past few months have underlined why I became a teacher a year ago.

Teaching can be hard work, but it also comes with unrivalled emotional rewards too - from seeing the moment a difficult concept finally clicks with a student, to receiving positive and beautifully humbling online messages from the students expressing their gratitude and how much they missed being in the classroom.

It might feel like a big decision to become a teacher, but what job could be better than helping young people reach their full potential and succeed as they go out into the world?

Teachers really do shape lives and this year has taught us why that’s so significant. Time to consider it?
