It was indeed interesting to read your report in the Yorkshire Evening Post on September 16 about the campaign to fly the EU flag in Leeds City Centre. Richard Wilson is the chairman of Leeds for Europe, who hasn’t moved on with the times yet.

He still wishes to remain in the EU with the benefit of seeing the EU flag flying on our civic flagpoles in Leeds. Despite the fact that Leeds was the only city in West Yorkshire that voted to remain in the EU, winning by a very small margin (approximately three per cent), the final combined result of the referendum for Yorkshire and Humberside of people who voted to leave the EU was 57.71 per cent with only 42 per cent to remain.

I can only imagine that the reason why Richard Wilson ascribes Leeds as “an important European City” is because his three per cent of the population of Leeds voted to remain in the EU. Not because of our Yorkshire pudding and parkin.

The UK needs to stand up for itself with the EU - YEP letters

To be frank the Remainers have no other choice. Now that we have left the EU they are expected to join the rest of the UK concentrating on putting their shoulder to the wheel and doing their best to turn the UK into a successful independent forward looking country, flying the Union Jack and our Yorkshire Rose with pride instead of constantly whinging and clinging to that outdated cause.

There is no good looking back at the success and failures of 40 odd years of EU diktat. Nor is flying a forlorn blue and yellow stateless flag on our city centre flagpoles just to appease .3 per cent of Leeds remainers. Tourists to Leeds would think we are mad.

Anyone who objects to this proposal should get in touch with their MP and Leeds City Council to countermand this barmy idea.

I can only suggest that Richard Wilson tries flying the flag in his own garden first to gauge the reaction.
