Yet the State of the North 2020 report makes for stark reading as it warns the chance to live a good life is fading away for too many people in the north of England.

It adds that decent jobs, wages and opportunities are becoming increasingly unattainable across the region.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has repeatedly warned about the deep-rooted social inequalities that exist here on our doorsteps in our city.

This worrying report surely has to be a wake-up call to the Government to focus on closing the inequality gap before it is in danger of getting wider.
