One man dead and another seriously injured in hospital following M62 lorry and car crash

The incident happened on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway towards Leeds at around 2.30pm yesterday afternoon.

It involved six vehicles, including four HGV lorries and a Ford Fiesta.

Initial police enquiries suggest most of the vehicles crashed after the Fiesta struck barriers and rebounded onto the carriageway which caused following vehicles to brake suddenly.

Four people were treated for injuries and a 39-year-old man from Huddersfield was pronounced dead a short time after the crash.

A 37-year-old man is still in hospital with serious injuries.

The crash closed the m62 in both directions for most of the afternoon and into the evening, and a Yorkshire Air Ambulance joined West Yorkshire Police officers and ambulance crews on the scene.

The Major Collision Enquiry Team is appealing for anyone with dashcam footage to contact 101 or report via the website quoting log 1041 of March 16.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision on the M62 motorway.

"The incident happened on the Eastbound carriageway at about 2.30pm yesterday (Tuesday), close to Junction 22, involving six vehicles.

"Four people were treated for injuries.

"One of those, a 39-year-old man from Huddersfield, was pronounced deceased a short time later.

"A 37-year old male remains in hospital with serious injuries.

"Initial enquiries suggest most of the vehicles were in collision after a Ford Fiesta struck barriers and rebounded on to the carriageway, which caused following vehicles to brake suddenly.
