On this day: The news making the #YEPleeds front page
Main story. A jobless labourer who pretended to be the Yorkshire Ripper was today jailed for eight years. The man, 50, from Sunderland, sent West Yorkshire police a hoax tape and letters claiming to be the Yorkshire Ripper at the height of the hunt for the mass murderer. That led police to divert their search to Sunderland because of the man’s distinctive Wearside accent, leaving Ripper Peter Sutcliffe free to kill another three women. The man admitted four counts of perverting the course of justice at Leeds Crown Court yesterday. Beryl Leach, 74, whose daughter Barbara was one of the three women, welcomed today’s sentence.
