Nominate your inspirational Yorkshire young achievers

The 24th Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards have been officially launched and today the YEP is calling on you to champion our region’s young people.

The awards, sponsored by McCormicks Solicitors of Harrogate, recognise the achievements of outstanding people in the region aged under 35 who have made an impact, whether nationally, regionally or locally.

On hand to launch the YEP-backed 2016 awards was the 2015 Unsung Hero winner and a young grant recipient.

Hannah Wilks took the Unsung Hero Award for her work with Marie Curie Cancer Care, while six-year-old Baila Lester received a grant towards a special tricycle designed to help improve her mobility after operations to her legs.

Awards chairman Peter McCormick OBE said: “We have already seen some great achievements by young people from our region this year and I suspect there will be more to come at the Rio Olympics.

“The awards are a way to celebrate such achievements while raising funds to help other young people in Yorkshire to achieve their own successes.”

Last year saw Emmerdale actress Daisy Campbell, of Methley, win the Achievement in the Arts category sponsored by the YEP.

Jono Lancaster, 31, of Normanton, a sufferer of the rare congenital disorder Treacher Collins Syndrome, was given the Special Award.

Nominations are available in a number of categories including personality of the year, youngster of the year and the YEP-backed achievement in the arts award.

The awards are organised by the Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation and have raised more than £1 million to support young people in Yorkshire. The closing date for nominations is September 9.
