New surf shack and beach bar set to make a splash in Leeds this summer
SUMMER is well and truly on its way and although Leeds might not be enjoying tropical temperatures just yet, one bar is hoping to give visitors a bit of a holiday vibe.
The Hedonist Project, which took over a spot on Lower Briggate last year, is transforming the site into a surf shack and beach bar.
It will come complete with rum-based cocktails, beach-themed murals by graffiti artists and a succinct menu of small, light summer dishes.
The venue changes concept every few months, switching up its decor, music, food and drinks menu to fit the theme.
The latest concept – Trader Dan’s Surf Shack – will run from June 30 to October 1.
Tom Finnon, from the Hedonist Project, told City Buzz: “The Mai Tai cocktail was invented by a guy known as Trader Vic and it’s quite a big name in the bar scene, so we’re carrying on that idea here.
“The music will be based on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 – as that was a game we had when we grew up so it’s nostalgic for us. There will be the likes of The Beach Boys and others too.
“The drinks will be long, tropical drinks. We’ve got a twist on the Old Fashioned where we smoke the glass with incense, and a zombie-style cocktail that’s amazing too.”
Tom, along with friends Bruce Lerman and Dan Crowther have known each other for 10 years, working at venues such as Smokestack, Epernay and Sandinista.
Tom added: “To open something unique is exciting and a privilege – and stressful at times too!”
The current concept – Old Tom’s Gin Kitchen – will end on June 25, before Trader Dan’s Surf Shack opens on June 30.
