The park in Moortown is based on part of the site of the old Yorkshire Bank sportsground and was created following a long-running campaign by the Moortown Community, who fought against proposals to build large numbers of houses on the site.

Part of it has now been built on but the remainder of the land was gifted by Camstead Homes.

The new community space will feature a play area with swings, monkey bars and a roundabout, as well as a sandpit and seating areas.

Pat Ingle, Chairman of Friends of Moortown Park, said: “Moortown doesn’t have any green spaces of its own so people often have to go further afield to places like Roundhay Park, so we expect it will be heavily used by the community.

“This is a culmination of many, many years of resident engagement and they are finally getting what they want, so we would like to thank Camstead Homes for that.”

The park is located behind Moortown Primary School and will be a space that pupils can use as well as other members of the community.

There are just over seven acres of land and by next summer there will be three mown grass areas for the public to enjoy.

Seeding for a wildflower meadow and wetland area will now take place in the spring due to the weather conditions but should be ready by mid-summer.

Residents are also working with Leeds City Council on a management plan to ensure the park is well maintained and accessible
for everyone.

Leeds Parks and Countryside has been in charge of the building work.

It has not yet been able to confirm an opening date but is hoping it will be in the next week as most of the fundamental work is now complete.
