Morley pulls together for flood victims

Over £1,500 was raised from the event at Morley town hall, which featured a tombola, raffle and coffee morning as well as a range of stalls.

Organisers Terry Grayshon and Christine Hirst were delighted with the turn-out and the amount of items donated for sale by members of the public and local businesses.

“Like many people, I was horrified when I saw the scenes unfolding across the north of England and to see Leeds so badly affected, I thought that really, we should do something to try and help. The event brought people from across Morley to the town hall, where they donated goods, bought things, drunk tea, ate cake, went on the raffle and tombola and helped to raise a fantastic amount for a very worthwhile cause. It’s quite marvellous.” said Terry.

The sale enabled councillors from all political parties to pull together alongside churches and community groups to man stalls. Deputy leader of Leeds City Council Lucinda Yeadon, whose Kirkstall ward was badly hit by the high water levels on Boxing Day, officially opened the event.

“The floods affected so many people in Leeds and my own ward of Kirkstall in particular. People have lost possessions in the floods and some of the businesses in Kirkstall Road have been devastated, people have lost their jobs and livelihoods. It’s heartwarming to see how people have come together in so many ways to support the flood victims and I am extremely grateful to Terry and Christine for organising today’s event and to all the people who have donated items for the sale and to those of you here today, thank you!” said Coun Yeadon.

Hundreds of people visited the sale and the proceeds will now be donated directly to the Leeds Flood Relief Appeal.

“It goes to show what people can do when they are given the opportunity to help others. The response has been quite fantastic, it has brought people together to help those in need and once again has shown how generous the people of Morley are. My thanks to everyone who has helped today to raise this wonderful amount,” added Christine.
