The centre sits at the heart of the town and plays host to everything from ballroom dancing to weddings and conferences.

And yesterday, (April 24) dozens of people gathered for a special birthday bash at the centre based in Far Headingley.

But what is it that makes this community centre so special?

Alison Gallant, a member of St Chad’s Parish Centre Management Committee, said that it has helped to bring together everyone in the community and encourages younger people to mingle with older members.

“It is all about bringing everyone together and celebrating what we have had over the last 50 years,” she said. “It is a real focus for the surrounding community and it is a great asset to have in the surrounding area.

“It has always been a very popular but over the last five years it has attracted a younger generation which is great for its future. It pulls the community together and encourages people to converse with people they don’t know. As a building, it is a well used facility with church groups or other organisations using the centre.”

Situated in Far Headingley, St Chad’s Parish Community Centre has, over the last 50 years, become a hub for activities and social gatherings.

Located just a few minutes from St Chad’s Parish Church, the centre draws a wide range of people on a regular basis. The centre has raised a huge amount of money over the last five decades to see some renovations and modernisation to the much used building.

At yesterday’s party, attendees were taken on a trip back through memory lane with a series of photographs that highlighted the contribution that the centre has made to the community over the last 50 years.
