Margaret Faull to leave as boss of National Coal Mining Museum

The boss of the National Coal Mining museum is leaving her role after almost 30 years at the organisation.

Managing director Dr Margaret Faull will leave in October after leading the museum at Caphouse Colliery, Overton, to multi award-winning success.

The archeologist and renowned historian, who was awarded the OBE in 2009, joined the museum’s predecessor the Yorkshire Mining Museum in the mid 1970s.

She previously worked for Thwaite Mills Industrial Museum near Leeds after being an archeologist for the former West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council.

David Hinchliffe, chairman of trustees at the mining museum, said: “Margaret Faull has been central to the enormous success of the Museum since its early years as the Yorkshire Mining Museum.

“Her appointment at the outset showed the great vision of those establishing the Museum and Margaret has successfully led it through many challenges.

“Achieving national status and now holding major collections and a library of national importance particularly stands out.”

The National Coal Mining Museum for England has won 12 major awards, including five for disabled access, and is currently on a short list of six for the Daily Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award.
