Look Up Leeds: Welcoming splash of colour to the city

Even on the darkest and dreariest of winter days there is a vibrant pop of colour on Lower Briggate that can't fail to put a smile on your face.

SYMBOL: The re-named Leeds Freedom Bridge which welcomes visitors and brightens your day.

For many years the viaduct bridge over Lower Briggate was just like any other rail bridge blending into the background but now it is bold red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple statement.

Routine maintenance work was carried out as planned in September 2016 but it was decided to transform the bridge after local LGBT campaigner Thomas Wales and Leeds City Council collaborated.

The paint job was revealed in time for Valentine’s Day last year. The colour scheme is adopted internationally as a celebration of freedom in sexuality and each colour represents something different, from life and harmony to nature and spirit.

In the heart of the Leeds Pride activities, the bridge is a symbol that the city welcomes and celebrates diversity.
