Leeds's star students celebrate top marks in A-level results

Star students in Leeds are celebrating after getting top marks in their A-level results today (Thursday).

Young people across the country found out today whether they got the all-important results they needed to seal their university place.

And in Leeds, dozens of students are jumping for joy after landing their first choice university.

Roundhay School student Amanda Ciarka said she burst into tears after finding out she achieved three A*s this morning.

The 18-year-old, who also achieved an A in her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), will now study psychology at Leeds University in September.

She said: “It was amazing when I opened my results, I just burst into tears.

“I have worked incredibly hard, I had pretty much no social life because I was studying.

“I thought I was going to do much worse in one subject, so to see all A*s was just overwhelming.”

Also at the school, student Roddy MacSween is celebrating after he was accepted by the University of Cambridge to study computer science with maths.

Roddy, from Roundhay, said: “I’m really excited about getting into Cambridge and I’m looking forward to going there.

“I was kind of expecting my A-level results but I practised a lot for my Cambridge entrance exams.

“The atmosphere at the school today was really good and most of my friends were happy with their results and got into their first choice universities.”

He achieved a clean sweep of three A*s, as well as an A in his EPQ.

And in Moortown, Allerton Grange student Ellen Common landed a place at the University of Liverpool following her impressive results today.

The 18-year-old achieved an ABB and said she can’t wait to start her French an Hispanic studies in Merseyside from September.

She said: “It was a bit of a horrible feeling not knowing whether I go into university or not before seeing the results.

“But I’m really looking forward to going to Liverpool now - it was my first choice.

“I worked really hard last year and I didn’t get the grades that I wanted and I got a bit upset, so getting them this year is great because it all came together in the end.”
