Betsy Kay, who celebrated her first birthday yesterday, suffers from mitochondrial disorder, which has caused the youngster to have a thickened heart muscle and a high amount of acid in her blood.
Other symptoms include failure to thrive, muscle weakness and a rare heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
A charity football match to raise awareness and funding for research into the disease was held at Bruntcliffe Academy in Morley yesterday.
Money raised will go to the Mitochondrial Research Fund.
