Leeds United effort raises cash in memory of Gary Speed

Money generated by ticket sales from a recent Elland Road dinner marking the 25th anniversary of United’s 1992 title win has been donated to the charitable trust that bears Speed’s name. United themselves chipped in to take the amount raised to £10,000. The money will now be used to support sports and mental health charities in the cities where Speed played. His dad, Roger, said he was “touched” by the generosity shown by Leeds and the club’s fans.

Flintshire-born Speed started his career with United and went on to make more than 300 appearances for the club.

He formed part of the famed midfield quartet that was instrumental in Leeds’s 1991-92 First Division title triumph.

Speed, who also had spells with Everton, Newcastle United and Sheffield United, died in 2011, aged 42.
