Leeds TV viewers happy to play name game

WHAT'S in a name? Plenty, it seems, when it comes to the humble TV remote control.

A survey carried out on behalf of TV Licensing has revealed the weird and wonderful range of names people have for their remote.

Nationwide, popular names include the doofer, the zapper, the clicker, the flicker, the switcher and even the thing-a-ma-jig.

But in Leeds, according to the survey, the most widely used and typically no-nonsense alternative word for a remote control is the ‘stick’.

TV Licensing spokesman Matthew Thompson said: “Three years ago, research identified around 50 pet names for the remote control, but as the way we watch TV diversifies, it’s natural our language will adapt according to new behaviours and ways of watching.”
