Michael Rosen, who has written more than 140 books, met pupils at Cross Gates Primary School yesterday as part of the school’s work to help children engage with literacy and improve their reading.

Pupils had the chance to work with the celebrated author and hear a presentation about his work.

Children across Leeds East Primary Partnership Schools have also been preparing for Michael’s visit by learning about him and his books.

Rosaleen Hamer, headteacher at Cross Gates Primary School, said: “Michael will provide inspiration for the work we are doing across the five schools on reading.”

Mr Rosen was appointed the sixth British Children’s Laureate in June 2007, and held the honour until June 2009.

His books include We’re Going On a Bear Hunt, Quick Let’s Get Out Of Here and the Sad Book.

Councillor Lisa Mulherin, Leeds City Council’s executive member for children and families said: “It’s always wonderful for pupils to meet the people behind some of their favourite stories and to learn more about how authors come up with the ideas which capture the imaginations of so many children and young people.

“Having a former Children’s Laureate in school is also a tremendously exciting opportunity to engage pupils with their literacy and language and to get them to thinking about the power of reading and books from a different perspective.”
