Leeds recommends: Vegan food

Vegans are on the increase - and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants and health food shops which cater to those following a plant-based diet. Here's a round-up of your favourites.

Kirsty Bridgwood. Hansa’s.

Bhavesh Sonigra. Tribal Cafe.

Charlie Stagg. Millie’s on Vicar Lane, great health food shop with loads of vegan options. Their cottage pie is not to be missed!

Jessica Billings. That Old Chestnut is a fab vegan bakery on Mabgate. Great choice of cakes that prove being vegan doesn’t have to mean no treats.

Tania Wells. Roots and Fruits has expanded from vegetarian into vegan. Fantastic burritos. Good cake selection too.

Maya Prince. Global Tribe on Swan Street does tofu so well. Loads of well-known dishes with a tofu element, including a full English!

Jake Garbutt. Humpit near the Corn Exchange - essentially hummus and pitta, but with lots of toppings and sides too.

Jenny Aston. 2 Oxford Place is quite fancy and it has a vegan menu, plus it’s all gluten-free. I love the aubergine curry.

Alex Leith. Hansa’s. Vegan Indian cuisine is such a good idea. Lots of pulses.

Jonny Leigh. Grove Cafe does vegan pizza! It’s also a takeaway so they deliver.

Richard Manning. Filmore and Union in Moortown - very welcoming place with lots of vegan options and a great brunch offer.

Alice Freeman. Hyde Park Book Club near Headingley does good vegan meals, including its ‘fake meat’ range.

Ruairi Barrett. Inkwell Arts in Chapel Allerton run a vegan and veggie cafe on a Saturday and it’s great. They use produce from their own garden, it’s for charity and it’s served by volunteers.

Lise Parr. Bundobust is a bar but its food menu is very pro-vegan. Lovely, healthy Indian food.

Jareth Kinsey. I like the vegan breakfast at Nichols, which is a vegetarian cafe and deli in Chapel Allerton.

Imogen Saunders. Humpit is one of my favourite lunch stops - great for a healthy takeout. You can have all sorts of garnishes.

Caitlin Shaw. Lots of cool bars in Leeds now serve vegan beers - worth asking for.

Dominic Clay. I prefer healthy cafes that do vegan and non-vegan choices so you can go in a large group and there’s something to suit everyone. Filmore and Union in the Victoria Quarter is good for that reason.

Izzy O’Neill. That Old Chestnut is a really good place to stock up on vegan snacks and great for naughty treats.

Charlotte Hagan. Often overlooked but Kith and Kin in Chapel Allerton does vegan choices, using ingredients from local allotment growers.

David Thorpe. I get all my essentials from Millie’s, good range of brands and ingredients for vegan cooking.

Francesca Cardini. Worth looking round the indoor market as some of the stalls are starting to cater for vegan cooks.
