Leeds pupils spend day with author Anne Fine

Primary school pupils from Leeds schools spent an afternoon gaining insight into the life and work of former Children's Laureate Anne Fine, when she visited The Grammar School at Leeds.

Ms Fine told the Year Five pupils from four schools about how her life was full of inspiration for stories.

A boy who spoke with her for hours about Tottenham Hotspur was one inspiring moment, she told them. Another was a newspaper story of a dog who scared people who mistook it for an escaped lion.

“Anyone else who sees the same thing thinks ‘that’s a laugh,’ while a writer thinks ‘what a great story,” she said.

Pupil Mohammed said: “I’ve never met an author in my life. I got to meet an author who wrote a book that I’ve read.”

The visit took place as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival, which the school sponsors. Ms Fine’s books have been translated into 45 languages.
