Leeds nostalgia: Your Letters

Herewith, a selection of your letters to Times Past...

Pictured is the new bell-ringing team at Armley Christ Church, Leeds. Left to right: Nigel Thornton, Philip Barehead, Edward Lofthouse, Richard Thornton, Michael Tiffany, Stuart Armitage, Denise Rodgers and Sharon Preston.

They are still under instruction from Mr. and Mrs. R. Worford, bell-ringers at St. Matthew's Church, Chapel Allerton.

"We only recently started ringing the bells on a Sunday," said Mr. Nigel Thornton, an engineering student, of Armley Grange Drive. "We have to keep muffles on yet, but hope that in a few weeks we may be experienced enought to ring without them."Leeds. 14th July 1970

I am Denise Hargrave (nee Rodgers) as shown in the Yorkshire Evening Post on August 8) with the bell ringers team at Armley Christ Church.

My aunt saved me the report and it was certainly a blast from the past, renewing fond memories of my time. I am sure any of the others who saw the article will have been surprised to see it as well.

Regarding the recent article on the Children’s Day at Rounday Park, I was an 11-year-old attending Chapeltown Secondary Modern School on Harrogate Road and our school was represented in the massed PE display at Children’s Day at Roundhay Park.

I took part in that display.

My recollection is that Childen’s Day was held on a Saturday (probably July 23) and was not attended by Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.

They visited Roundhay Park on Wednesday (July 27) and were entertained by a programme of events which included the massed PE display.

I can remember the royal couple being driven around the perimeter of the arena in an open topped car and they then watched the events from the small enclosure opposite Hill 60.

I have boasted about performing in front of the future Queen ever since.

Interesting item recently on Skyrack Wapentake.

Unfortunately the accompanying photograph is not of the Shire Oak but an island of trees and bushes on the site of the present war memorial.

The Shire Oak was to the left of your photograph on the other side of Headingley Lane.
